Award-winning Nigerian visual artist, writer, and photographer, Victor Ehihkamenor, transformed music legend, King Sunny Adé‘s vintage Fender Telecaster guitar into a stunning work of art.
Earlier this week, the guitar was auctioned off – at King Sunny Adé’s 70th birthday and 50th anniversary on stage – for an impressive ₦52.1 million.
While speaking about his work on the guitar and his love for King Sunny Ade, Victor said:
“When you are given the opportunity to add a line to the history of a legend, you’d better ask God to take your hand and guide your senses.I’ve loved King Sunny Adé’s music for the longest time and his rhythm is one of the best companions in my studio when working.”
Victor refers to his style of art as abstract, symbolic and politically motivated; influenced by the duality of African traditional religion and the interception of Western beliefs, memories and nostalgia.
He has held numerous solo art exhibitions across the world and his work has been used for editorials as well as cover art on books by renowned authors like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie – and now he can add this incredible feat to his already impressive list of achievements.
